IVBRC Digital Literacy Workshop - Calipatria
On July 10, 2025, the Imperial Valley Business Resource Center (IVBRC) brought digital empowerment to the heart of Calipatria by hosting a hands-on Digital Literacy Workshop at the Calipatria Latin American Club. Designed to equip residents with essential online skills and tools, the event helped participants gain confidence in navigating the digital world safely and effectively.
This workshop is part of a larger initiative led by Imperial Regional Alliance (IRA) to bridge the digital divide in Imperial County. Through the Imperial Valley Business Resource Center, IRA provides free training, resources, and access to technology, empowering individuals and families to take advantage of new opportunities in education, employment, and daily life.
Real Skills for Real Life
The workshop kicked off with a welcome and an overview of the day’s agenda. Participants then completed a quick digital skills assessment, providing insight into their familiarity with email, internet navigation, and online safety.
Mastering Email Communication
In the first session, attendees learned how to create and manage an email account, an essential skill in today’s digital economy. Through live demonstrations and guided practice, participants explored how to compose, send, and organize messages, while gaining a better understanding of inbox management and basic security features.
Exploring the Online World
Next, participants were introduced to web browsers, search engines, and online tools like Google Maps, YouTube, and QR codes. From searching for accurate information to finding directions and accessing digital content, this session emphasized practical ways to use the internet as a tool for learning, connection, and convenience.
Staying Safe in the Digital Space
The final session focused on digital safety and privacy, critical components of any online experience. Attendees learned how to create strong passwords, recognize phishing scams, and protect personal data. The interactive discussion encouraged open dialogue and real-life examples, empowering participants to be more vigilant and informed online.
Lasting Impact and Continued Learning
To promote ongoing digital learning, IVBRC gifted a digital device to every participant. In addition, three devices were donated to the Calipatria Latin American Club, ensuring the organization can continue to support digital access for its members.
The event closed with a recap of key lessons. IVBRC staff encouraged participants to continue exploring digital tools, reinforcing that access to technology, and the skills to use it, can open doors to a better quality of life.
This workshop was made possible thanks to the generous support and collaboration of our dedicated partners; Imperial Valley Economic Development Corporation (IVEDC), Southern Border Broadband Consortium (SBBC), California Emerging Technology Fund (CETF) and AT&T Foundation.
Together, these partners are working to ensure that no one in Imperial County is left behind in the digital age.
